Tools to help you evaluate information found online

Understanding Web Address's (URL) and Links

All webpages should be evaluated for relevancy, appropriateness, detail, currency, authority, and bias but before you move on to these criteria you should take a look at the links associated with the webpage. Use the following pages to learn more.

  • URLs: Use the webpage's URL (Uniform Resource Locator) to determine what kind of page you are viewing, where it comes from, and whether or not it is a personal webpage.
  • Top-Level Domains: Learn about common top-level domains, such as .com, .gov, and .org.
  • Links and Back Links: Make an initial judgment about a webpage by examining the links to and from that page.
